Calls to Action Study Group with Dr. Niigaanwewidam Sinclair

Deepen your understanding of the The Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action and explore how you can take meaningful steps forward.

Please join us for a Calls to Action Study Group series guided by the insights and teachings of Dr. Niigaan Sinclair!

May 6, May 20, June 3, June 17 | 12:00  – 1:30 PM | Online via Zoom

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action are not simply recommendations. They come from Residential Schools Survivors’ testimony, and they are a fundamental roadmap for transforming relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples across what is now known as Canada. They address education, justice, child welfare, language revitalization, and corporate responsibility. Engaging with them is essential for building a more just and equitable society. This is an opportunity to come together in a spirit of learning, reflection, and dialogue. In each session, we will engage with key ideas, stories, and perspectives that help us better understand why the Calls to Action matter—not only as a historical document, but as a foundation for Reconciliation.

Together, we will explore:

  • What the Calls to Action are and how they came to be
  • Why they are essential to truth, justice, and Reconciliation
  • How colonial histories continue to shape present realities
  • What it means to take responsibility and begin taking action.

Niigaan Sinclair is Anishinaabe from Peguis First Nation. He is an award-winning writer, editor, and professor of Indigenous Studies at the University of Manitoba who was named by Maclean’s magazine in 2022 as one of the most influential people in Canada. Niigaan is a multiple nominee of Canadian columnist of the year (winning in 2018), and his commentary appears weekly on multiple platforms across Canada – from the pages of The Winnipeg Free Press to TV shows on CBC, APTN, and on his co-hosted podcast Niigaan and the Lone Ranger. His first book Wînipêk: Visions of Canada from an Indigenous Centre (McClelland & Stewart, 2024), was a national bestseller that won the 2024 Governor General Award for Non-fiction.

Justice Murray Sinclair (baa), Canadian Senator and Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, reminds us, “Education is what got us into this mess, and education is what will get us out of it.”

Presented by The Neighbourhood Group,  Toronto South West Local Immigration Partnership, and North York Community House, this gathering is open to students, organizations, companies, and anyone who is committed to learning, reflection, and meaningful action toward Reconciliation.

This study group offers a space to:

  • Deepen your understanding of the Calls to Action
  • Reflect on your role in reconciliation
  • Engage in thoughtful discussion and shared learning
  • Explore how you can take meaningful steps forward personally, and within your organizations

Whether you are just beginning your learning journey or are already engaged in this work, your participation is both welcome and needed.

Together, through learning and action, we can contribute to a future grounded in respect, responsibility, and reciprocal relationships.

Reconciliation is not a destination—it is an ongoing process that requires awareness, accountability, and action. This study group is a starting point.

We hope you’ll join us.

“All Canadians must be part of this journey, whether they are connected to its history or not. We must all dare to live greatly together.” – Justice Murray Sinclair baa
