Champions of Lotherton Pathway: Kiki

Champions of Lotherton Pathway is a series of stories told by community leaders and residents from the Lotherton neighborhood. These dedicated community leaders and residents have been working tirelessly in the Lotherton neighbourhood, building a community where all belong and thrive.

I am Li Hua, but everyone calls me Kiki. I live in Lotherton with my husband and three children. I migrated from China to Canada in 2002 and I have lived in Lotherton for 16 years. I am a part of the Green Champions, and the Lotherton Resident Group, I also support with the gardens in the community as a Garden Animator, as well as, helping with outreach for community activities.

“ I am always there to support when I  am needed. I am excited about and interested in helping to contribute and make my community better.” — Li Hua

On Fridays, I help coordinate a series of activities with the children ranging from playing ping pong, chess, to board games. I find this to be a wonderful way of creating recreational space for the children in our community. When they meet their friends, they get to hang out, play, learn new skills, and engage in a variety of activities. I like to see the joy on their faces.

Throughout the years, I have taken part in and helped with various programs and activities in Lotherton, such as the Ping Pong Club, the Keyboard Helper, Lunar New Year Celebration since 2015, and the English Conversation Circle helper from 2015-2016.

Outreach can be difficult, because it can be hard to know who needs help. However, I hope to see the community continue to grow with the creation and continuation of programs and initiatives for children, youth, seniors, and families.
