Champions of Lotherton Pathway: Eduardo Idio

Champions of Lotherton Pathway is a series of stories told by community leaders and residents from the Lotherton neighborhood. These dedicated community leaders and residents have been working tirelessly in the Lotherton neighbourhood, building a community where all belong and thrive.

My name is Eduardo Idio. I was born and raised in the Philippines. I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing. I migrated to Canada as a Live-in Caregiver because we thought Canada was a land of milk and honey. During my first few months, I was unhappy as things did not go as planned in Canada. Through my difficulties, my mother advised me to be patient, and that things would eventually work out. There are many immigrants who come to Canada with their professions, however, they are unable to practice their professions because of the lack of Canadian education and experience.

I am happy to say that I am presently a Canadian citizen working in a Nursing Home through the guidance and protection of our Almighty God. I am also thankful to my mother for her guidance, advice, and direction, as well as my ability to persevere to achieve my goal.  For now, I have two children, a 15-year-old daughter, and an 18 months son.

I moved to the wonderful Lotherton Village in January 2015. I made lots of friends in such a short period of time. Most people in the community are friendly.  Eventually, I learned there are lots of Filipinos in the community, so we decided to form a Filipino Association. I got elected as a Treasurer, and I am currently still in this role. In the community, I started to notice that a few people were not properly throwing out their garbage and recycling but instead were scattered on the ground in the garbage area. The association came together, and we decided to have a cleaning drive to clear out the garbage areas. We have been doing this for a couple of years but not this year due to COVID-19 pandemic.

“I am a solution oriented person, when I notice something is not right, I immediately want to resolve it.  I am always thinking about the wellbeing of the community, and how our actions can benefit everyone.”

I am open to any volunteering work for the betterment and beautification of our community. I am fascinated every time I see clean surroundings with lots of plants and flowers. It is so refreshing to our mind and soul. Presently, I am a part time worker at North York Community House as a garden animator.

“I love volunteering and supporting my community, I would love to see having a nice playground for the kids, recreational facilities, spaces for young people, and to be honest, low maintenance fee. ”

I would like to see more and more residents getting involved, we are a small community, and we all want the best for each other. I hope and believe that something wonderful would happen in this beautiful community in the future with God’s guidance and protection.
