Meet Djenane Saint Juste, author, storyteller, and artistic director of Afoutayi Haitian Dance, Music and Arts Company.

A professional choreographer, dancer, and writer specializing in Haitian traditional dance and folklore, Djenane shares the richness of Haitian culture through movement, music, and storytelling.

Goldeen Duncan, Self-Employment Worker at North York Community House, catches up with Djenane at the launch of her children’s book The Mermaid and the Whale.

This beautiful retelling of a beloved Haitian fable follows a man who travels to the island of La Gonâve in search of gold. With the help of two mysterious creatures he discovers that he already has everything he needs for a happy life.

Written in English, Haitian Creole, French, and Spanish, the book invites children and families to sing, dance, and discover Haitian culture through storytelling.

Djenane participated in the Self-Employment program at North York Community House, which helps newcomer entrepreneurs develop their business ideas and launch ventures in Canada.
