September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day to recognize the history and ongoing impacts of residential schools and to reflect on our shared responsibilities toward truth and reconciliation.

This September, North York Community House is hosting and participating in two events that create opportunities to learn, listen, reflect, and consider how we can take action toward reconciliation.

Special Screening of Smoke Signals

Join us for a special screening of Smoke Signals, the 1998 film directed by Chris Eyre and based on the work of Indigenous writer Sherman Alexie.

The screening will feature Dr. Evan Adams, who plays Thomas Builds-The-Fire in the film. Following the screening, attendees will have an opportunity to hear from Dr. Adams and learn more about the film and its significance.

Beyond Orange Shirt Day: Truth, Responsibility and Action

On the eve of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, join us for a special evening of conversation, reflection, and action.

Featuring Dr. Niigaan Sinclair and Doug Sinclair of Indigenous Watchdog, this event will explore what it means to move beyond awareness and consider our responsibilities to truth and reconciliation.

Together, we will create space to listen, learn, reflect on the history and ongoing impacts of colonialism, and consider the actions we can take as individuals and communities.
