Once Upon A Refugee
On Thursday, April 19, 2018, we hosted a free community education event called Once Upon a Refugee. Our aim was to amplify the voices of refugees to Canada through storytelling. With videos, art work, and guest speakers, we highlighted the challenges that refugees must overcome in establishing themselves in a new country, and celebrated the accomplishments that they have made - often against all odds. Thank you to everyone who joined us. Thank you to the NYCH staff and volunteers who worked tirelessly to make it all happen, to our funders United Way Greater Toronto and the Catherine Donnelly Foundation, to our corporate sponsors Summer Fresh Salads, Marché Adonis, and DeSerres, to the helpful staff at Toronto City Hall, to Kate McG Photography, to violinist Sandor Budai and oud player Nigol Kouyoumjian, to NYCH's Newcomer Youth Arts Group and Women's Wellness Group - and THANK YOU to the brave storytellers who shared their refugee journey so openly with us through speeches and digital stories!
Watch the Stories
Some of the #childrens #artwork on display at @nychonline #RefugeeStories event last week. Really powerful event. The digital and live storytelling from #refugees was so moving. One of the best community events I’ve ever been to. Hit home for me because the only two people I’ve ever loved (outside of my family and friends) were not born in #Canada. As if this event wasn’t enough to make me cry, that realization came to me for the first time and yes, I was the one crying in the second row! 🧐😍 #loveovereverything
