At NYCH, we have a fantastic group of volunteers. So, we thought we'd introduce you to some of the amazing individuals who generously share their time and expertise across our organization.
Q: What made you decide to become a volunteer?
A: My motivation for volunteering is I am grateful for the help I received when I came to Canada and I want to give back to the community. I think volunteering can help people in need to receive necessary support, same as I got before. That’s why I became a volunteer.
Q: How did you get connected with North York Community House?
A: I heard about NYCH from my husband, who was a NYCH volunteer before. My instructor at Medix College also mentioned NYCH as an agency that students could contact for volunteering opportunities.
Q: What has been your favourite thing about volunteering at NYCH so far?
A: Volunteering at NYCH, I was encouraged to get involved in presenting some sessions for their Citizenship Preparation Program. After my first presentation, I got a “thank you” email from a NYCH worker saying that she appreciated my effort. Her recognition motivated me a lot. The staff at NYCH are very supportive, and that encourages me to engage in volunteering at NYCH.
Q: Why do you think volunteering is important?
A: Volunteering gives people an opportunity to make a useful contribution to the community. I think it is a practical way to encourage people to participate in social work by sharing their skills and experiences for the development of the society.
Q: If you could have any superpower, what would it be (and why)?
A: If I could have a superpower, I wish it could be a healing power that would help me to heal all the diseases and sufferings, bring happiness to all families and make people's lives better.
We're so grateful for the efforts of all our volunteers, and hope to feature many more of them on our blog. If you would like to volunteer with North York Community House, please submit an online application.
