At NYCH, we have a fantastic group of volunteers. So, we thought we'd introduce you to some of the amazing individuals who generously share their time and expertise across our organization.
Meet Isabel - she has volunteered with our Get Moving! After-School Program, as well as at various community events.
Q: What made you decide to become a volunteer?
A: I became a volunteer of North York Community House because I wanted to work with children and youth and be an inspiration with my art and face-painting. I have taught Creative Arts at the Get Moving! Program at Joyce Parkway, Flemington and have face-painted at some NYCH events - and the children never forget my slogan: "Art is Beautiful".
Q: How did you get connected with North York Community House?
A: I was shopping in Lawrence Square one day and decided to drop in to the North York Community House office there. I saw the coordinator of the Get Moving! Program and that was it - she told me to start volunteering right away. Then, I also started getting involved with all of the events, programs and volunteer workshops at NYCH.
Q: What has been your favourite thing about volunteering at NYCH so far?
A: My favourite thing about volunteering at NYCH is that I really appreciate the staff utilizing and recognizing my artistic talents, so I am able to do events and make them more fun with my face-painting, crafts and other skills. Coming out to do their events creates a great community spirit!
I also like the fact that I have been able to promote my art, and especially the face-painting. Staff and organizers have given me funds to cover the cost of paint which I also really appreciate.
And lastly, I love that I have been an inspiration to the children and youth with my art.
Q: Why do you think volunteering is important?
A: Volunteering is important because we are reaching out to the community - children, youth and seniors - and using our skills and talents. It is also good for our all around natural well-being.
It also develops your ability to get along with people, use your skills and use your time wisely.
Q: If you could have any superpower, what would it be (and why)?
My superpower would be Magic because I would like (in a flash) to see and to have a better living environment for children and youth...that means more events, more programming and MORE ART!
