At NYCH, we have a fantastic group of volunteers. So, we thought we'd introduce you to some of the amazing individuals who generously share their time and expertise across our organization.
Meet Mehmet - he has been a Volunteer Mentor with NYCH since February 2016 - and has provided support to newcomers in the areas of language, networking and Canadian workplace culture.
Q: What made you decide to become a volunteer?
A: I want to be in touch with people in my free time. I love meeting new people; people from different countries and cities. I believe I have a lot to learn from each person that I meet.
Q: How did you get connected with North York Community House?
A: I met Maxine and Gulcin at a volunteer fair at York University. We had a pleasant conversation, and I decided to keep in touch to figure out what opportunities there were for me in terms of volunteering.
Q: What has been your favourite thing about volunteering at NYCH so far?
A: I like the fact that NYCH has a good dynamic. I did not have a chance to meet everyone in the team yet but I am looking forward to it.
Q: Why do you think volunteering is important?
A: Volunteering is important because it gives us an opportunity to share our life experiences with others while learning from others at the same time.
Q: If you could have any superpower, what would it be (and why)?
A: I would love to be able to soothe people instantly because it breaks my heart to see people suffer.
We're so grateful for the efforts of all our volunteers, and hope to feature many more of them on our blog. If you would like to volunteer with North York Community House, please submit an online application.
